Quality Use of Medicines
Quality Use of Medicines (QUM) is a philosophy deeply embedded in our culture at Mundipharma. QUM embraces choosing suitable medicines if a medicine is considered necessary, selecting management options wisely and using medicines safely and effectively. Working in partnership with key stakeholders to ensure appropriate prescribing, dispensing and use of Mundipharma medicines, QUM leads to improved quality of life for patients.
QUM initiatives
Educating healthcare professionals about best practice pain management
Mundipharma conducts educational programs, led by experts in pain management, to teach healthcare professionals how to properly assess, treat, document and monitor patients suffering from pain.
The programs also assist with early identification of behaviours in individuals who may be at risk of prescription medicine abuse, providing physicians with sufficient time to take action in order to reduce the risk of potential harm to patients.
As part of our commitment to QUM, Mundipharma seeks to work with medical colleges and associations and pharmacy associations, including:
- Royal Australasian College of Physicians
- Faculty of Pain Medicine
- Royal Australian College of General Practitioners
- Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists
- Australian Association of Consultant Pharmacy
- Pharmaceutical Society of Australia
- The Pharmacy Guild of Australia
- Home Medicines Review
- Palliative Care Australia
Mundipharma Australia is a member of Medicines Australia and adheres strictly to the Medicines Australia Code of Conduct in all its dealings with healthcare professionals, ensuring that they receive accurate, balanced information to assist their prescribing decisions.
Distributing medical practice guidelines and other resource items
To ensure healthcare professionals have up to date information, Mundipharma Australia distributes a variety of medical practice guidelines and resource items to healthcare professionals. Examples include:
- Prescription Opioid Policy published by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, Faculty of Pain Medicine, Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, and Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists
- Therapeutic Guidelines: Analgesic
- Therapeutic Guidelines: Palliative Care
Mundipharma also produces and distributes high quality, evidence-based educational material to help healthcare professionals better assess and treat pain, as well as recognise and prevent the misuse and diversion of opioid analgesics.
Working with State and Federal Government agencies and law enforcement
We continuously work with State and Federal Government agencies and law enforcement agencies to assist in regulating the prescribing and dispensing of controlled drugs and to ensure QUM.
Federal agencies:
- Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA)
- Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS)
- Medicare Australia
- National Prescribing Service Limited
State/Territory agencies:
- Department of Health and Human Services
- Police Drug and Alcohol Strategy Units
- Drugs of Dependence Unit
- Poisons Control
Ensuring the security and integrity of our product supply chain
As opioids are controlled (Schedule eight) drugs, Mundipharma has strict security measures in place to ensure the safety and quality use of all of our products.
Mundipharma works hard to ensure that our supply chain remains robust and secure so that those suffering from severe, disabling pain are not put at risk of untreated pain through our inability to supply their essential medicines.
