Leading consultant pharmacists Neil Petrie and Ingrid Johnston have won the 2016 Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) Award for Quality Use of Medicines (QUM) in Pain Management. As the peak national body for pharmacists, PSA has partnered with Mundipharma to offer the 2016 QUM Award to highlight and support pharmacists’ role in pain management. PSA and Mundipharma are committed to providing the best health outcomes for every patient with persistent pain through quality use of medicines.
Mr Petrie and Ms Johnston – who will receive their prestigious Award at the PSA16 conference on July 30 – have worked in partnership at PRN Consulting for several years, specialising in quality use of medicines for residential aged care facilities.
Mr Petrie said he and Ms Johnston were delighted to receive the Award following several years of providing quick and ongoing access to resources for pain management and other QUM topics.
“We are honoured to be recognised for the development of the PRN Consulting website, which has been a quality improvement activity implemented to improve the use of medicines in our community,” Mr Petrie said.
“Our resources – which are continually updated and improved – include interactive e-learning modules to newsletters, audit tools and links to other useful information. We thank Mundipharma for supporting this important Award and encouraging QUM.”
Mundipharma Medical Affairs Director Dr Brian Muller said: “We are delighted that this year’s Award received an unprecedented number of entries. This is a testimony to the efforts of those across the industry who strive to make a difference to consumers with persistent pain through QUM.
“Mundipharma is proud to sponsor this Award as part of our ongoing commitment to improving patient care, and we congratulate Neil Petrie and Ingrid Johnston on their win.”
PSA National President Joe Demarte congratulated both winners, saying: “Pharmacists have an important responsibility to monitor and question the use of opioids and advising patients on the most effective and safest way to take their medications.”
Embracing the theme Leading Pharmacy Innovation, the comprehensive and engaging PSA16 conference will be held from July 29 to 31 at the Four Points by Sheraton Darling Harbour hotel in Sydney with new state-of-the-art facilities.
